shades of green

shades of green

the leaves rustling against the wind
felt like my hair against your fingertips
I took in the crisp fresh air
thinking of possibilities
it’s that feeling, you know
of wanting to know more
of wanting to curl into
and I found myself safe there in your arms
on a sunny hill under a willow tree
i let you take my tiny hand in yours
in the middle of night
you would let me crawl on top of you
the safest place in the world
leaving me with no need for tears
my heavy heart suspended
my soul crouched there in your arms
in the darkness
I wonder if you would make my quietest dreams real
on a random Tuesday
on a doorstep
mine
To see you there waiting
To see you look at me
as my heels turned the staircase corner
briefcase in one hand
keys in another
I would be home
I wouldn’t need another kind of green
I already don’t
it’s the way my hands fits in yours
the way you make for sure
certain small details
the way you lean into me against the doorway
man, woman
under the streetlight shadow
on a crisp autumn night
it’s everything I could never say out loud
that you know
the silent smiles, the lingering fear, the faintest need
the sore spot I can;t even pronounce without it tearing through my heart
that emptiness from October’s goodbye
the one I never told you aboutthe way you pull me in when I turn my face away to blink it away
in snapshot moments
all that you know
I don’t need another kind of green
to know I’m on the right side with you
